How can I use Socialight?

Any way you want! Have fun! If you think you found a great way to use Socialight, or have a Socialight story, drop us a line and let us know. Also let us know if you'd mind if we post it on the site to share with others!

I lied about my age to get an account. Will I get in trouble?

Don't lie about your age. We don't like liars and if we find out, we might tell your parents. Seriously - Socialight is designed for people over the age of 13 and if you're too young, please wait until you're old enough. While we try to make the community as safe as possible, Socialight, like any communications network, can be dangerous.

Can I use Socialight to track my friends?

Socialight might be used to find where your friends are, but we wouldn't call it a "friend tracker". The way to let others know where you are is by creating a Sticky Note. People nearby or elsewhere might see your Sticky Note to find out.

What's a Sticky Note in Socialight?

A Sticky Note is like a virtual yellow 'sticky' (you know - those things you buy at the stationery shop) stuck to a specific place using Socialight. Sticky Notes can contain text, pictures, and audio. Once you have created a Sticky Note, you can use the Socialight mobile application or this web site to view it.

Will Socialight work where I am?

We currently only support Socialight in the US (with Europe coming soon), so if you're not here, we can't guarantee that everything will work properly. However we do know that Socialight will work elsewhere; it just hasn't been fully tested. Try it out where you are and let us know what you find. We've heard things might work ok in Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia (Moscow only), San Marino, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey (Istanbul only), and the United Kingdom.

How do I invite a friend to use Socialight?

From the People section, just click the Invite link and you can invite people using their email addresses or you can import contacts from your web-based address books.

Why not just let everyone be my contact?

In Socialight, when you make someone a contact, that means you'll be able to give them access to content you create that others won't be able to see. When you create a Sticky, you decide who can see it, whether that's everyone, just you, or just your contacts. If you're careful about who you let be your contact, Socialight becomes an even more powerful tool for sharing stuff with the people you trust.

What's a Channel?

In Socialight, a Channel brings people together to create and view Sticky Notes and stay in touch with each other. If you subscribe to a Channel, you'll be able to have Sticky Notes from that Channel delivered to you on your mobile when you're near the Sticky. Depending on the Channel, you may be also able to add Stickies and create Posts. If you create your own Channel, you can decide who can create Stickies there and who can see them.

Safety

How do you protect my privacy?

For a major run-down on what you need to know about Socialight and your privacy, see our Privacy Policy. The basics are that only tell other users about your location when you create a Sticky Note and tell people where you are. Be careful when you create a Sticky Note where you are. If you think you might not want others to know where you are, don't create the note, or create it just for yourself or contacts. Otherwise, your location may be shared with us, but we won't share this with any other users and we'll throw out the data soon after we get it.

If I use Socialight, can everyone tell where I've been?

Socialight is not a passive friend tracker. People can only tell where you've been when you create Sticky Notes. If you want to let people know where you are, go for it, but be safe and think twice before letting others know where you are.

Ok - Sticky Notes are fun. But I'm getting so many it's annoying. How do I turn this thing down?

Sometimes, people want to see Sticky Notes from everyone everywhere. But other times, people only want to see stuff from the people they trust. If you go to Delivery Preferences section of Settings, you can change these options.

Do you have some tips for staying safe while using Socialight?

Sure - this is important so listen closely! Only accept contact requests from people you know and trust. If you're not sure, don't accept. Think twice before creating a Sticky Note and deciding who can see it. If you think you might not want certain people seeing a note, don't post it for them. Never agree to meet people you don't know. If you follow these rules and use common sense, you'll have a lot of fun.

Advanced

Do you offer developer tools? An API?

We sure do! Our API (application programming interface) allows developers of mobile, web, and other internet-based applications to build on top of the Socialight platform. It's a simple, yet powerful way to make Socialight do what you want it to do. You can access Socialight's API at www.socialight.com/api. From there, you'll be able to sign up for a key and review reference documentation, a how-to document, and code samples.
